The History of Yoga

by Jan Foster, LPCC, CYI

Yoga, a literal translation from the Sanskrit word for "union" is an ancient practice that seeks to unite and create harmony of body, mind and spirit.

Yoga is associated with India because the first information about yoga was recorded there several thousand years ago. However, sculptures of yoga poses have been found in other cultures. No one really knows for certain when or where yoga originated, but it is estimated to be at least 5,000 years old.

Hatha yoga, the physical discipline now practiced regularly by over 6,000,000 Americans, is only one of six distinct branches of yoga, all of which are considered important paths to self-discovery and personal transformation.

The Six Branches of Yoga

  1. Hatha yoga is the path of physical discipline and health. "Hatha" literally translates as "power" or "effort."
  2. Raja yoga is the path of meditation.
  3. Karma yoga is the path of selfless service to others.
  4. Bhakti yoga is the path of heart-felt devotion as a way to cultivate acceptance and tolerance for others.
  5. Jnana yoga is the path of wisdom and development of the intellect.
  6. Tantra yoga is the path of ritual, ceremony and celebration as a way of bringing a reverential attitude to everyday activities.
